The Hunt for Lady Olive & the German Submarine (BBC documentary)

Broadcast on the BBC, this is my first feature length documentary.

An underwater and archaeological odyssey in search of a lost German submarine and the circumstances of its alleged battle with a secret Royal Navy ‘Q’ Ship. With a detective trail across Europe, plus the maritime archaeology of divers and filmmakers working at depths of over 75m, you have an epic adventure woven into this adrenaline-fuelled film beautifully narrated by David Harewood OBE.

The Future is Plastics. It’s in our blood.

We were proud to contribute our time and expertise to this charity campaign, which powerfully highlights the issue of ocean plastic pollution in a thought provoking way.

The images have been widely used by scientists and marine conservation organisations worldwide, reaching over a million views on BBC News social media. One image, featuring a baby holding a hypodermic needle, even sparked public debate (watch the video to discover the true story behind it!).

The series was also nominated for the prestigious Prix Pictet Awards and played a meaningful role in raising global awareness of the scale of this environmental challenge.

The Mad Tea’s Hatter’s Party

An eerie exploration in multiple still image layers, combined in a complex After Effects animation. Utilising extremely high resolution images to transition from one time-scape to the next, each scene accompanied with haunting sound effects and hidden messages.

Best viewed full screen with the sound up.

The MEV City car commercial

This commercial was scripted, filmed and edited at Karl Taylor Photography including sourcing local talent. The commercial has been licensed to distributors and agents for the brand in various regions.

The Guernsey Scallop Diver

A short film following a typical day in the life of the diving legend Richard Keen.

Commissioned by and filmed entirely on Hasselblad cameras as a demonstration of the capabilities of the Hasselblad H6 for medium format film work, providing a cinematic look in tonal range and depth of field.

The Making of ‘The Guernsey Scallop Diver’

An interesting behind the scenes perspective on the making of the short film ‘The Guernsey Scallop Diver’ (see the short film above).

Sub Aqua & Nautical Showreel

A video demonstrating my underwater video work as well as topside nautical and aerial filming. Some sequnces are filmed at considerable depths, up to 75m, in extremely low light conditions utilising specialist equipment.

The Cairnside

Step into the haunting world of the ship wreck the ‘Cairnside’ as we explore the depths set against the stunning track ‘End of the Affair’ by Ben Howard.

BBC One - The One Show: Recreating ‘Dali Atomicus’

An insight into my creation of the famous image ‘Dali Atomicus’ and the accompanying BBC One feature on the ‘One Show’.

H6 ‘Paint Explosions’

Commissioned by Hasselblad Camera Company for the 2016 launch of the 100mp H6 camera. This video reveals the extreme complexity (and mess) that was necessary to produce the inspiring campaign launch images. A weeks work went into the production and probably another week in the clean up!

BBC One - The One Show ‘Living Photo’

The team and I set about recreating an old technique called ‘Anamorphosis’ for the BBC on the ‘The One Show’ - the technique was employed in the early 1900’s by the photographer Arthur Mole using tens of thousands of people to form the image.

Our task was to produce a portrait of Arthur Mole with the same technique but using less than a thousand kids from a school in Colchester.

Red Sea Diving Expedition

In this video we explore inside and out some of the wrecks of the Red Sea including the ‘Giannis D’, the ‘Rosalie Muller’ and the ‘Thistlegorm’ among others. Set to the wonderful track of ‘Non Believer’ by London Grammar.

‘Thoughts on a Tech Dive’

In this video we explore the wreck of the ‘Bizon’ a cargo ship sunk by torpedo during WW2. On this occassion it was a particulalarly pleasant dive with good light considering the depth. The video is set perfectly against the music ‘Everything I am is yours’ by Villagers.
